US: Orange school's hydroponic greenhouse wins National Wildlife Federation distinction

City high schoolers are seeing silver, thanks to their green thumbs.

The National Wildlife Federation’s Eco-Schools USA program has granted Orange High School its silver award in recognition of the school’s environmental initiative, capped by its fully-functioning hydroponic greenhouse.

“Really, this started in 2009 when our Superintendent Ronald Lee and I visited Garden State Urban Farms here in the city,” said Candace Goldstein, Director of Special Programs.

“He came back and said, ‘we have to do this with our students.’ In conjunction with all of the academic components, we looked at this as a real, potential career path.”

After several years of development, the school officially opened the greenhouse last year under the leadership of teacher Jonathan Rosenthal.
