China and Mexico sign agreements worth $7.4 million

China and Mexico signed 14 bilateral agreements worth more than $7.4 billion Thursday after a meeting of the respective presidents of the two countries, Enrique Peña Nieto and Xi Jinping, in the People’s Palace in Beijing.

Included in the agreements is the $2.4 billion bi-national investment fund that will support infrastructure, mining, and energy projects in both countries.

Agreements in the food exports sector were also signed, formalizing the authorization for Mexico to export beef, blackberries and raspberries to China and for Chinese citrus fruits to come into the Mexican market.

In reference to the agreements in science and technology, Peña Nieto said, “Mexico will be the first Latin American country to do joint research with China in the areas of biotechnology, aerospace science and nanotechnology,” among others.

The agreements were signed after an hour of meetings between Xi and Peña Nieto on the last day of a state visit in which the Mexican president also attended the annual summit of leaders from the Asia-Pacific in Yanqi Lake in the northern outskirts of Beijing.
