Philippines: Senate body to intensify drive for organic farming
The Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food has vowed to intensify campaigns to promote organic agriculture.
Senator Cynthia A. Villar, committee chair who delivered the keynote address on Tuesday's opening of the 11th National Organic Agriculture Congress at the SMX Convention Center, said measures being considered in the promotion of organic farming in the country include the mechanization assistance for organic farming in the budget of the Department of Agriculture (DA), putting composting facility near public markets, talking with Land Bank of the Philippines for better access to finance for farmers, and talking with the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) on the development of the agriculture program.
She said in the recent crafting of the national budget for the 2015, they made sure an allotment for organic agriculture will include a portion for assisting organic farmers in the mechanization of their farming process for them to become more competitive.
