Pro-Mix YP for young plant production

‘Young Plant’ production is a growing segment of the horticulture industry. Most growing medium manufacturers have products to accommodate seed germination and plug applications, but there is a need for growing medium designed specifically for starting cuttings in small to large cells. With this expanding market, several companies have developed machinery to wrap paper and other materials around growing medium to form small pots. These miniature pots are made by extruding growing medium into ‘tube-shaped’ outer wrapper and gluing the seam inside the wrapped tube (similar to how sausage is made). The media filled, the paper-wrapped tube is cut into segments that are then placed in individual cells in propagation trays.

With these types of pots, the growing medium must be free of sticks to avoid tearing the wrapping or damaging the saw blades that cut each pot. Most growers also prefer a growing medium that has good air porosity and is fibrous. This presents a challenge for peat moss producers to remove all sticks and small tree roots from Sphagnum peat moss that are found naturally, but retain the fibre of the peat moss for a well structured growing medium.

A sister business unit of Premier Tech Horticulture, Premier Tech Chronos, has developed an improved screening system to process Canadian Sphagnum peat moss with minimal fine peat-moss particles, that is virtually stick free. This new, innovative equipment and process of screening Sphagnum peat moss along with a precise blend of coir fibre, perlite, limestone, wetting agent and low soluble starter nutrient is the formulation of our new growing medium for young plants called Pro-Mix YP.

Pro-Mix YP is designed for production of rooted and unrooted cuttings grown in paper-wrapped pots >30 mm (1.18 inch), but can also be used for transplanting plugs into jumbo paper-wrapped pots and germination of seeds in large cell plug trays (72 count tray and larger). PRO-MIX® YP is a precise blend that will resist compaction from repeated misting and watering, yet hold together adequately in paper wrapped pots.

Ingredients:
Canadian Sphagnum peat moss (45-55%)
Coir fibre - improves long-term wettability, air porosity and reduces long term compaction.
Perlite (horticultural grade) - improves air porosity
Dolomitic and calcitic limestone - for initial pH adjustment (5.2-5.6)
Starter fertilizer charge - low solubility, granular starter fertilizer feeds young plant for 4 weeks
Wetting agent
