Yemen seeks to enhance agricultural production

Work is under way at the Yemeni Agriculture Ministry to expand the cultivation of food crops and limit the cultivation of qat, which it says has become a threat to food security in the country.

A variety of official entities and civil society organisations are working together to expand the production of crops including coffee, grains, vegetables and fruits.

According to the Central Statistical Organisation, Yemen's production of crops such as grains, fruits, vegetables and animal feed declined 165,000 tonnes in 2013 compared to their production volume in 2012, while qat production increased by 3,000 tonnes in 2013.

Ministry undersecretary Abdel Malik al-Thor spoke with Al-Shorfa about the ministry's strategy to increase crop production and strengthen food security across the country.
