AU: Officials impressed by sustainable capacity of greenhouses

Imagine glasshouses attached to power stations, sucking up otherwise harmful carbon dioxide to promote plant growth. Or glasshouses so large they are like small cities, or mangoes produced under two metres of snow.

Jonathan Lidbetter, from the Department of Primary Industry on the Central Coast of New South Wales, has recently returned from a trip to Mexico to look at the latest glasshouse technology.

"The rate of expansion in Mexico is phenomenal," he said.

"We saw one site that was 60 hectares of glass and plastic and they are planning to expand 12 hectares every year."

The glasshouses are producing food for the North American market and it's a very different environment to work in.

"They are like mini cities, they have their own energy plants and they also feed back into the grid," Mr Lidbetter said.
