Australia: Fast tracked planning approvals for 10 major Geelong projects, including giant sustainable farm

Planning for a $320 million sustainable farm near Geelong will be fast tracked.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy today announced the fast-tracking of a number of major projects in the Geelong region as part of new election promises.

Sustainable Farms is a project between HRL Developments Pty Ltd, Mercer Stokes and Fresh Select to create a 100 per cent sustainable, cost efficient, large-scale food production enterprise with significant export potential.

The state-of-the-art horticulture farm will be built on 150ha at Avalon, near Geelong, and generate $160 million a year.

Once the project reaches full scale in 2021, Sustainable Farms expects to create more than 1000 jobs and generate $160 million annually.

The farming conglomerate will be Australia’s first waste-to-energy-to-fresh food production enterprise.

Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons has been calling for the project to be fast tracked since it was announced in July.
