Fair Food label coming to Florida tomatoes

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers has been fighting for higher wages for Florida's tomato field laborers for several years and now they have a label to inform consumers.

The Fair Food label will appear on Florida tomatoes at stores participating in the program. Retailers such as Wal-Mart, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's have signed on. They pay a premium for the tomatoes to support a "penny per pound" bonus that is paid to the field workers.

The program is similar to coffee labeled as "fair trade," which informs consumers that coffee growers were paid a fair price.

Other companies that signed on to the Fair Food Program include McDonald's, Burger King, Chipotle, Subway, Taco Bell and others.
