US (MI): Pankow horticulture program receives grant

Frederick V. Pankow Center horticulture science students will soon have the opportunity to extend the growing season, as the group was recently awarded a $100,000 grant.

Frederick V. Pankow Center horticulture science teacher Shirley Tautolo and her students were recently awarded at $100,000 service-learning grant from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board. Tautolo said she received the grant in mid-September.

“This is a service learning project,” Tautolo said. “That means students do community service while learning is taking place related to the class.”

The grant money will fund the building of a high tunnel greenhouse and community garden at the Frederick V. Pankow Center in Clinton Township, a L’Anse Creuse school. The greenhouse and garden will extend the growing season, which will allow students additional time to plant and harvest crops. Food raised in the garden will be donated to several local food banks. To make the garden and greenhouse sustainable, some of the produce will also be sold, Tautolo said.
