Nepal: Govt preparing plan to boost flower industry

The government is preparing an action plan to boost the floriculture sector as commercial flower farming has grown in recent years, Agriculture Secretary Jaya Mukund Khanal said Friday while addressing the inaugural of the Flower Competition and Expo.

“We have sent a draft action plan to the National Planning Commission for its approval,” said Khanal. “And we have allocated a budget of Rs 10 million to implement it.” He said the government’s move followed a swelling flower market and growing number of florists.

Dinesh Shrestha, vice-president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), said that the Agriculture Ministry should promote flower exports.

“The future of the floriculture industry is very bright as there is great demand for flowers in the international market,” he added.
