MHA team visits South Kashmir to assess damages

Asia: JK seeks liberal GoI funding for agri losses

The government Friday sought liberal central funding to meet the production losses in the agriculture and horticulture sector due to worst-ever floods in Kashmir last months.

The officials of Union Ministry of Home Affairs and other central departments, including Agriculture and Finance, today visited the areas of Kulgam, Anantang and Pulwama to take stock of the damages. The damage to the crop and fruit losses in the three districts has been heavy due to the recent floods.

The central team was informed by the State officials that the assistance under the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) norms was too less to compensate for the production losses, which are near Rs 5,000 crores in Kashmir division.

Under SDRF norms for each hectare of crop loss, farmers are eligible for assistance of Rs 9,000 in irrigated areas while for rain-fed areas they are entitled for assistance of Rs 4,500.
