US (LA): Rabbiteye Blueberry is triple-purpose Super Plant

The naming of today’s Louisiana Super Plant wraps up the task of evaluating and naming the final plant in this educational and marketing program for the year 2014. Already several plants have been tabbed for the Super Plant honour for next year, but these will not be revealed to the public until spring 2015. I can tell you the plants chosen for next spring include three bedding plants and one shrub

But let’s get to the star of today’s show, the Rabbiteye Blueberry. A number of gardeners have been asking for the super plant program to include a fruiting plant or a vegetable plant occasionally. Well, the Rabbiteye Blueberry certainly meets that request as far as fruiting plants go. Since blueberries are native to our state, these plants have a distinct cultural edge being adapted to our prevailing climate and to a wide variety of soil types. Their fruits also rank very high in human nutrition. Furthermore, they are available in several different varieties with some bearing their ripe fruits relatively early while others ripen a bit later. By having both types, an extended harvest season is not only possible, but easy to attain.
