Pleasant View Gardens focuses on efficiency with production expansion, upgrades

Pleasant View Gardens has added more than 30,000 square feet of production space and upgraded existing greenhouses at their Loudon, New Hampshire location.

“The main advantage will be better light levels for earlier crops and being able to bring finished product to market earlier,” says Henry Huntington, president. “We’re continuing to improve our efficiency and upgrade growing facilities—our focus on quality demands better environments.”

This move answers Pleasant View Gardens’ demand for both increased production space and enhanced efficiency. The project replaced older double poly hoop houses heated by oil with new greenhouses that will be heated by the operation’s energy-saving biomass boiler system, which burns wood chips. The naturally ventilated houses are also designed to provide maximum light. “Better heat plus better light equals better plants,” says Henry.

Labour efficiency was also a key part of the project: The old houses were all separated and required going outside from one house to the next. The new construction, gutter-connected Nexus single atrium glasshouses, is totally enclosed and connects the entire operation. Additional efficiencies come from components including booms, curtains, HAF fans and concrete flood floors.

Production in the new range will primarily consist of Proven Winners brand spring finished materials including hanging baskets, 4.25-inch grande’ and mixed patio pots, though Henry says anything is possible: “The new greenhouse space allows us to have greater control over additional environments, creating more opportunity for new crops.”

The expansion takes production at Loudon to approximately 55,000 sq. ft., for a total of 14 acres indoors at all locations.
