EU proposal to ban mixed organic and non-organic units

ORGANIC farmers have blasted European proposals which could spell the end of mixed organic and non-organic units.

The plans, which are currently being consulted on, were drawn up in a bid to strengthen standards and unify their application across the European Union.

Currently, an organic farm is entitled to have a non-organic element running alongside it. Despite this, it can still be classified as organic as long as organic certification bodies are happy with the way the business operates and feel it meets the relevant criteria.

Critics believe the EU plans will end up having a negative, rather than positive impact.

Organic Farmers and Growers (OFG), which inspects and certifies a significant proportion of UK organic food and farming, said it would not back the proposals in their current form.
