US (CA): Ag students to benefit from new greenhouse
The Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, or AFNR, Department of the Bullard Independent School District will soon have another educational tool to help students enrolled in the agriculture classes at Bullard High School as construction is near completion on a 30 by 60 foot arched greenhouse.
The idea of the greenhouse came when Charlotte Main, agriculture teacher at BHS, applied for a Green Thumb Project. Grant through the Bullard Education Foundation in October 2013. The BEF awarded Main the grant in December, in the amount of $5,000. Other funds for the project are supplied by BISD.
After receiving the grant, the plans for the greenhouse were taken to BISD administrators, in order for to plan the location of the greenhouse. Plans for the facility were finalized in the spring of 2014, while the location was finalized this summer.
“I hope the agriculture teachers at BHS will use the greenhouse to teach our students a hands-on approach about the horticulture industry,” said Main. “Sustainable agriculture is very important to our future as agriculturalists and food consumers. The agriculture industry is the nation’s number one employer, which means many of our students will one day be employed in this industry.”
