Dominican Republic: Greenhouse vegetable production reaches 30.4 million kilos

The Dominican Minister of Agriculture, Ángel Estévez, reported that the country's greenhouse vegetable acreage has expanded in recent years to reach 8,500,000 square metres.

He said that, as of June, the total volume of vegetables produced in greenhouses has reached 30.4 million kilos, including crops such as bell peppers, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, on the vine tomatoes, hot peppers, herbs and boogaloo tomatoes, among others; with about 21.2 million kilos exported generating $ 52.8 million.

The official said that as a result of programmes implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, the country is fully self-sufficient in several greatly demanded products, including rice, chicken, eggs, bananas, beef, cassava and sweet potato.
