US (CA): Native Here Nursery keeps focus on local plants

Wearing a gardening hat and holding a watering hose, Charli Danielsen is not standing in an orchestra pit as she gazes out on thousands of plants -- wooly morning glories, blue nightshade and black sage.

But after managing a native plant nursery in the Berkeley hills as a volunteer for nearly 20 years, the Kensington resident said the job does feel a bit like conducting music, even if star flowers, wild ginger and Indian paintbrush aren't known for their singing.

Danielsen, 74, has devoted countless hours to preserving and protecting California's native plants. Her focal point is Native Here Nursery on Golf Course Road in Tilden Regional Park, which she founded in the 1990s.
