Tanzania: Tomato pest “Tuta absoluta” threatens northern Tanzanian farmers

Tomato growers in northern Tanzania have expressed concerns over the outbreak of strange pest “Tuta absoluta” which is threatening their activities and economic lifeline.

One of the small-scale tomato producers on the slopes of Mount Meru, Pendaeli Palangyo told Xinhua here on Monday that his two- acre tomato farm is attacked by a strange disease.

“I lost everything in my farm despite the fact I was expecting to harvest the produce by next month. I don’t know where the disease comes from is,” Palangyo said, calling extension officers and other experts to address the disease.
