Australia: New varieties on trial at Tesselaar Tulip Festival in Silvan

Every year the tulip festival — which kicked off last week — is known for its beautiful blooms, but serious work also goes into trialling new varieties for gardeners around the country.

This year the furand (in lipstick pink), the salvo (in soft pink and white) and the candy prince (in lilac) are being trialled for their disease resistance and heat tolerance in harsh Australian conditions.

Tesselaar marketing manager Neil Bates said the farm trialled about 20 new varieties from Europe each year, but continued to grow two or three.
