Australia: The Flowers Victoria flower of the month is the alstroemeria

September's Flowers Victoria flower of the month is the alstroemeria.

In December last year Flowers Victoria — the association representing Victoria’s cut flower growers — initiated a “flower of the month” campaign to raise awareness for the different varieties grown in Victoria.

You would imagine that a flower which is one of the top 10 bestsellers at flower auctions in The Netherlands — where roses are number one — would need to have a gorgeous scent as one of its characteristics, but alstroemeria has no scent at all.

Alstroemeria is available year round and has a very long stem when first picked (about 90cm), has a vase life of at least two weeks and comes in strong or pastel colours.

Because of it’s shelf life, alstroemeria is favoured for use in hospitals and in bridal bouquets.
