US: USDA releases veggie reports for 2014
Tomato processors contracted 3,900 acres in Michigan for 2014, an increase of 700 acres from the previous year. Processing tomato production is forecast at 140,400 tons, up 29 percent from 2013.
Michigan's asparagus production totaled 208,000 hundredweight (cwt) in 2014, up 1 percent from the previous year. The area harvested for fresh market and processing was 8,600 acres, down 400 acres from 2013. Yield, at 24 cwt per acre, was up 1 cwt per acre from the previous year. Total value of Michigan's asparagus production was $19.37 million, up 4 percent from 2013.
Michigan's onion growers intend to harvest 3,000 acres of summer storage onions in 2014, up 11 percent from last year. Onion yield was forecast at 325 hundredweight (cwt) per acre, up 25 cwt per acre from last year's final. Total production was forecast at 975,000 cwt, up 20 percent from a year ago. At the U.S. level, growers expect to harvest 97,100 acres of storage onions this year, up 1 percent from last year.
Snap bean processors contracted 4,500 acres in Indiana for 2014, a decrease of 10 percent from last year, according to the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Region. The estimated production of processing snap beans under contract increased 16 percent to 16,790 tons. Nationally, contracted production of snap beans is forecast at 660,770 tons, up 7 percent from last year. Contracted harvested area is up 8 percent, but yield is down 0.05 tons per acre from last year.
Tomato processors contracted 7,700 acres in Indiana for 2014, a decrease of 1000 acres from the previous year. Processing tomato production is forecast at 261,800 tons, down 3 percent from 2013. In the United States, contracted tomato production is forecast at 14.6 million tons, up 17 percent from last year. Contracted harvested area is up 12 percent and yield is up 2.17 tons per acre from last year.
Tomato processors contracted 5,300 acres in Ohio for 2014, an increase of 200 acres from the previous year, according to the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Region. Processing tomato production is forecast at 164,300 tons, up 7 percent from 2013. Nationally, contracted tomato production is forecast at 14.6 million tons, up 17 percent from last year. Contracted harvested area is up 12 percent and yield is up 2.17 tons per acre from last year.
Ohio and Utah's onion growers intend to harvest 1,700 acres of summer storage onions in 2014, up 4 percent from last year. Onion yield was forecast at 479 hundredweight (cwt) per acre, down 44 cwt per acre from last year's final. Total production was forecast at 814,000 cwt, down 5 percent from a year ago. At the U.S. level, growers expect to harvest 97,100 acres of storage onions this year, up 1 percent from last year.
Nationally, the 2014 contracted processing vegetable production for the four major processing crops (snap beans, sweet corn, green peas, and tomatoes) is forecast at 18.2 million tons, up 14 percent from last year. Production of processing tomatoes, at 14.6 million tons, is up 17 percent from last year. Snap bean production, at 660,770 tons, is up 7 percent from last year's production. Sweet corn production, at 2.62 million tons, is up 3 percent from last year. Green pea production, at 345,359 tons, virtually unchanged from the previous year. Contracted area for harvest of the four major processing vegetable crops, at 951,420 acres, is 6 percent above 2013.
At the U.S. level, production of the 2014 asparagus crop is forecast at 731,000 cwt, down 4 percent from 2013. Area harvested, at 23,400 acres, is down 4 percent from last year. Fresh market production, at 568,000 cwt, is down 8 percent from 2013. Processed production, at 8,150 tons, is up 15 percent from last year.
