India: Shortage fuels hike in veggie prices

Heavy rains and floods that have disrupted life in central Gujarat seem to be throwing the kitchen budget off balance too. With blocked highways and the city on flood alert, vegetables and milk products have become dearer due to limited availability.

Following the floods on Tuesday, potato prices shot from Rs 30 per kg to Rs 40, while those of onion and tomato rose from Rs 20 to Rs 35 per kg. Prices of lady's finger went up from Rs 20 per kg to Rs 50. Spinach prices saw a huge leap from Rs 40 per kg to Rs 100 per kg.
