The secrets to growing colder

It’s really no secret at all: The end of summer doesn’t have to mean an end to the enjoyment of tasty garden vegetables.

Families can continue to enjoy the fruits of the garden deep into the fall and beyond by selecting cold-tolerant crops that can be harvested safely through November.

“Cold crops that can be planted in early fall include spinach, lettuce, radish and mustard greens,” said Mary Gerstenberger, a horticulture educator with the Michigan State University Extension in Macomb County. “Planted right now, it’s possible that early maturing peas would also work as a fall crop.”
