Almeria's greenhouse vegetables generated a total of 3,557 million Euro in the 2013/2014 campaign, according to data from the Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of the Government of Andalusia.
Excluding summer fruits, such as melons and watermelons, for which no official data is yet available, the total production of aubergines, courgettes, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and green beans has reached 2,596 million kilos.
The total cost of production for these vegetables was 1,248 million Euro, with growers selling them for a total of 1,480 million Euro at origin, as deduced from the data obtained through the Prices and Markets Observatory of the Government of Andalusia.
Considering the average sales value in Spain during the campaign, without taking into account the percentage of discards along the distribution chain or the added value contributed by export sales, the prices paid by consumers for Almeria's total greenhouse production amounts to the above mentioned sum of 3,557 million Euro.
Products
The most noteworthy results are achieved by tomatoes, with a production of 1,091 million kilos, production costs of 425 million Euro and a retail value of $ 644 million at origin and 1,407 million Euro paid by consumers.
Peppers are in second place with 550 million kilos produced, a production cost of 269 million Euro, a value at origin of 385 million Euro and an amount paid by consumers of 825 million Euro.
The third place is for courgettes, for which consumers paid 557 million Euro, from which growers received 159 million. The total production in Almeria's greenhouses reached 371 million kilos, with a production cost of 323 million Euro.
Almeria's greenhouse cucumber production reached 414 million kilos, with a production cost of 149 million Euro. Growers received 190 million Euro and consumers paid 497 million.
The aubergine production was of 146 million kilos, with a total cost of 60 million Euro, a value at origin of 73 million Euro and 207 million paid by consumers.
Lastly, green bean consumption generated a total of 64 million Euro, from which growers received 29 million, who had costs amounting to 22 million Euro for a production volume of 24 million kilos.
