US (CA): Lots of tomatoes make for sluggish market

A large supply of tomatoes from growers, combined with a typical summer lull in sales, has made for a weak market for tomatoes from California.

“The market is saturated with tomatoes right now,” said Todd Giardina of The DiMare Company. “The tomatoes are good, but prices are not very good.” He noted that the large volume of product has been coming from all over North America, not just California. Whether it be field-grown or greenhouse-grown tomatoes from Canada, or field-grown tomatoes from Michigan, there is a large supply of tomatoes on the market right now.

“Usually, between August and September, this is what we're up against,” said Giardina. “Some regions typically get hit with bad weather, which helps with prices, but we have good weather all around, so supplies are coming from everywhere.” Supplies from California are expected through the end of October.
