Australia: Tasmanian growers welcome poppy deal

Tasmania is not about to see its lucrative opium poppy industry go interstate despite losing its monopoly on production in Australia, the state’s Poppy Growers Association says.

State Primary Industries Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the Federal Government had decided to allow poppy production interstate, but only in a “controlled manner”.

Mr Rockliff said that was a positive outcome for Tasmania and its $100-million-a-year poppy industry.

The State Government had feared uncontrolled expansion interstate would undermine the reputation for safety and security, which Tasmania had earned as Australia’s sole opium producer.

“The development of a new Commonwealth-State agreement that is implemented over five years rather than uncontrolled expansion of growing in mainland states is a good outcome that reflects the Tasmanian Government’s position,” Mr Rockliff said.
