US (RI): Greenhouse in tandem with Cleveland Botanical Gardens
The greenhouse is part of a project by People United by Sustainable Housing (PUSH) in tandem with Cleveland Botanical Gardens (CBG).
According to Jen Kaminsky at PUSH, CBG has been partnering with cities across the Great Lakes in order to conduct studies on converting vacant lots into storm water management sites. PUSH has been working with CBG over the last few years to design “best practice” methods for storm water management. The longterm partnership is designed to help protect the Great Lakes from pollutants that enter Buffalo’s water system via the combined sewer system, which empties into the waterways after heavy rainfalls.
Once complete, the greenhouse will be a native plant nursery, growing varietals that are easy to transplant to other landscape sites throughout PUSH influenced neighbourhoods. The roof of the greenhouse is being designed to harvest rainwater, that is then used to water the plants inside.
