US (MA): Community Harvest Project connects students to nature, provides tons of fresh produce

The Community Harvest Project in Grafton has been working to provide food to those in need while creating a connection to nature and nutrition for numerous Worcester-area students.

"A lot of these kids grow up without ever seeing a farm or eating vegetables," said Americorps VISTA Marketing and Events Coordinator Marie Boyd. "We have had kids come up to us and say they are eating vegetables for the first time."

The Community Harvest Project distributes fresh fruit and vegetables to area food banks, such as the Worcester Food Bank. The nonprofit relies upon volunteer help, with more than 9,000 people giving their time last year to work on everything from planting to harvesting at their Grafton farm. Fourth- and fifth-graders, as well as kindergärtners, are among the youngest volunteers.

The project operates outreach programs that help educate children both in the classroom and in field trips to the farm. The program not only educates children, but brings them out into the field and has them try different fruits and vegetables.
