Canada: Spring Farmer receives grant to build commercial greenhouse

Since sprouting last fall, the Spring Farmer has been blossoming steadily in Huntsville.

Owner Jenny Spring has received a Sustainable New Agri-Food Products (SNAP) Program grant to build a commercial greenhouse in town.

The grant was designed to help food producers in northern Ontario acquire new equipment that would aide in the creation of a food or agriculture product.

“It’s exciting because we have a short growing season, so a greenhouse will allow us to grow longer and make Huntsville more sustainable,” said Spring, noting the greenhouse should be built by August.

The greenhouse will be about 100 by 40 feet. She plans to grow micro greens in the greenhouse for the winter, switching to early greens (spinach, lettuces, bok choy,) in the spring and tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers next summer.
