"Robin Bartels, Tozer Seeds: "Innovation is key to our sector"

"International interest in Flower Sprout"

Tozer Seeds is a family company from the United Kingdom and is specialised in the development of new varieties. It is the largest breeding company in the United Kingdom and distributes worldwide. In 2010 Tozer Seeds brought out the Flower Sprout. This is a mix between sprouts and kale. Robin Bartels, the sales and marketing manager of the company held a presentation during the European Vegetable Strategies about the new product which became very successful in a short period of time.

Introduction at Marks&Spencer
Bartels indicated that the introduction of the Flower Sprout was with the retailer Marks&Spencer. "Asda and Waitrose, who were convinced by this beautiful product, followed. In 2013 the Flower Sprout was third at the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award. This attracted international interest and created interest in many other countries. Of course, there has to be enough volume, but this is growing annually. The concept is already being rolled out in Europe, but there are also opportunities outside of this. There is mainly interest from the United States, a large fan of kale. This vegetables is a superfood there. The sales peak around Christmas."

He explained that innovation is important in the company. "We work closely with our partners in the entire chain in this. Many see innovation as an extra cost, but it is an investment in the future. Innovation is the key to our sector. There is demand for healthy new products with a delicious taste. It takes a while to develop something new, but it's worth it."
