Rainy spring in France should not concern farmers

For farmers in Poitou, the weather is neither good nor bad. There was a lot of rain and flooding in May, but it is too soon to be alarmed by the weather. There was enough rain for them to be slightly worried, but the end of the month was dry.

To avoid damage from the rain producers use greenhouses. Ludovic Babin who farms tomatoes in greenhouses says ''tomatoes are fragile. Too much water can bring diseases. My cabbages, onions and potatoes are in the ground at the moment, I can't really complain''. Mr Babin's advantage is that his ground is very sandy and efficiently drains extra water (it took in 70mm of water in 3 days - and does not need more).

Weather forecasts should reassure farmers, ''until Wednesday, the weather will be dry. After there is some rain.'' However Spring 2014 has been a lot less of a disaster than that of 2013.
