France: Greenhouse courgette production increases

This season, acreage has grown +2% (2,832 ha). Greenhouse production reaches 500 ha following a 10% growth in a year. Open air production has only grown moderately but reaches 2,000 ha and represents 70% of surfaces. Only crops under low shelters see a slight decrease (1%). Following low yields in 2013 due to an extremely cold spring, the French Ministry of Agriculture predicts a 12% growth compared to 2013 with a 136,200 ton potential and production peaking over July. Most French production is in the South-East (1,477 ha of which 300 ha are in greenhouses) and the South-West (411 ha).

Despite the financial crisis, the French don't seem to be cutting back on food expenditure. Fish, shellfish, fruit and vegetables are considered a priority. Jacques Rouchaussé, President of Légumes de France confirms that ''We have not seen a decrease in consumption, on the contrary, since the beginning of the year we have seen a 1.5 to 2% growth in volume of traditional winter products such as leeks, turnip, celery and salad''. One reason for people turning to fresh produce is realising that it is 5 to 6 times cheaper than a ready meal, grated carrot is 10 times more expensive in a deli for example.
