Technical Absorbents Ltd:

Use Super Absorbent Fibre in hanging baskets for highly controlled water delivery to roots

As budding gardeners welcome the arrival of spring and start preparing their hanging baskets and planters, a new innovative water-retaining liner fabric will help make nurturing and caring for plants a lot less time consuming and reduce overall water usage.

The Super Absorbent Fibre (SAF) technology of UK based manufacturer Technical Absorbents Ltd (TAL), is a unique fibrous technology and which creates new possibilities for the development of fabrics that can be used as both temporary and long-term plant root watering systems, even in areas of low water availability. Such fabrics are designed to achieve highly controlled delivery of water to root systems, whilst significantly reducing evaporative loss and water seepage. SAF can also be dosed directly to the soil.

TAL’s new Agrotas basket liner fabric can be cut to shape and used to line the base of potted plants and hanging baskets, and can even be used in vertical gardens. It works by absorbing and holding the necessary quantity of water which then provides an optimum moisture environment for plant growth. Using this technology can decrease overall water usage by up to 50% over the growing season and significantly reduces re-watering frequency. Fertilizer can also be added to the water to aid the control of dosage levels.

“This water management SAF fabric technology is extremely robust and versatile, offering root systems optimum water and nutrient feed levels” explains Technical Sales Manager Mr Dave Hill. “For a fabric that has a thickness of only 2.5mm, it has an absorbent capacity of between 24 and 33 gram per gram.

“Initially, we are selling packs of three hanging basket liners,” explains Mr Hill. “Each liner is 34cms in diameter but can be cut to size for smaller baskets. In time, the fabric will also be available in linear metres. TAL is excited about the potential for this technology and hoping that it is received well by gardeners in the UK and overseas.”

TAL Agrotas liner fabrics are currently available on the company’s Ebay page: ebay.eu/1hgUeyR. To discuss the potential for larger quantities, please email [email protected] or call +44 (0)1472 244053
