Czech Republic: 'Increasing interest, yet need for better organic agriculture productivity'

For health-conscious consumers, organic fruits and vegetables are often seen as a better choice. Yet in the Czech Republic, sales of organic food remain relatively low, accounting for a modest 0.8 percent or so of the total market, while in some Denmark the figure is 5 percent and in Switzerland as high as 6 percent.

High prices — organic vegetables can cost several times as much as their non-organic equivalents and tend to be more expensive than in some neighboring countries — and a lower priority given to environmental issues by the public have been cited as factors curbing sales.

They are increasing however, according to Jiří Urban, head of the organic unit at the Central Institute for Supervising and Testing in Agriculture (ÚKZÚZ) .
