US (KY): Greenhouse sales up and running in the WCPS

All four greenhouses in the Warren County Public Schools are up and running. Greenwood High School opened its greenhouse for plant sales from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. last Saturday. Weekday sales are from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Greenwood agriculture teacher Ron Tipton said.

Warren Central, Warren East and South Warren high schools also started sales at their greenhouses. “We’re not just doing this out of a textbook,” said Katy Doyle, agriculture teacher at Warren East. “Greenhouse students use their skills in biology, chemistry, math and business in a real-life way. It’s a team effort.”

At Warren East, hanging plant baskets are popular gift items for Mother’s Day, she said.

“The kids have the responsibility of taking care of their own plants from seed to when they are sold,” said Samantha Moseley, agriculture teacher at Warren Central. The money from the sales goes into WCHS agriculture programs, such as the agriculture construction program taught by Ed Hendrick.

The sales from the greenhouse have a long tradition at Warren Central. “It seems to sell itself,” Moseley said. Red geraniums and tomatoes are big sellers, she said.
