UK: Working together to sell plants profitably

A Plant Selling Guide for nursery sales staff and retail plant teams has been produced by the HTA to help everyone involved in buying and selling garden plants through independent garden retailers.

Written by HTA Business Improvement Consultant Andy Campbell in association with the HTA Retail Suppliers Group, the guide aims to improve understanding of the key drivers of profitability within plant retailing and identifies the wide range of discussion topics to explore in negotiations between both parties.

The broader objective of the guide is to avoid a decline in the value of the garden plant market enabling profitability for both retailer and supplier.

HTA Head of Horticulture Raoul Curtis-Machin comments “This comprehensive guide contains the information and advice you need to increase your profits and run a successful plant sales operation. It covers ranging, product quality, achieving margin and promotional activity. Selling Plants Profitably will be essential reading for everyone in garden retail.”

The guide identifies the opportunities to increase profitability within four key areas: Range, Quality, Price and Promotion particularly where working together can highlight and drive a change in approach. Strengthening communications between trading partners will ensure a stronger industry in the future, that will not just survive but thrive again as it has done in the past.
