US (CA): New greenhouse at Campbell Community Centre to benefit students, city
The project began with a conversation several years ago, when parks maintenance workers Chuck Porter and Dave Olson discussed how great it would be to have a greenhouse and garden on the community centre property. Such a project would save the maintenance workers both money and time in the long run, Porter said.
The new greenhouse, located in the northeast corner of the community centre near the tennis courts, was erected about six weeks ago, but work on the site began long before that.
In September, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students helped lay the foundation for the structure, ran the irrigation and dug out the trenches for the raised beds in the garden. "They've taken a nice ownership of the project, being involved literally from the ground up," Porter said.
The greenhouse pieces arrived from Germany in late November, and it took four maintenance workers about three days to put the structure together. "We couldn't figure it out at first, but everything fits perfectly," Porter said.
The greenhouse is about 17 feet long, 10 feet wide and 8 feet tall and is enclosed by a fence to deter vandalism. It has four skylights that open automatically to regulate the temperature and the building's walls protect against ultraviolet light.
