Increased tomato planting density showcased in Cravo retractable roof greenhouse
According to Richard Vollebregt of Cravo, growers were particularly impressed with the fact there was minimal damage from late blight considering that the pressure has been very severe this season in the region and there was no virus on any of the varieties in the trial.
Three busloads of growers also took the opportunity to see a 42 hectare retractable roof house in operation growing roma tomatoes. While most growers on the tour were initially concerned about the impact of whitefly in the retractable roof house, they were able to see that there was less than 1% infection in the 1 million plants in production. The growers also commented that the fruit was very firm like a field tomato but with the appearance of a greenhouse tomato. The growers at this operation were also able to prevent any significant loss due to late blight by exposing the plants to the direct sunlight and using the roof to protect the plants from excessive moisture.
