German import of fresh vegetables down slightly

After a record value in 2012 the German import of fresh vegetables has decreased slightly over the last year, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website. According to the German Bureau of Statistics' final import figures, Germany imported 2% less vegetables in 2012 compared to the previous year, with 3.07 million tonnes.

It was mainly the import amount of onions (-10%), leafy lettuce (-9%) and cabbages (-5%) that decreased. Slightly less cucumbers were also imported, whereas the import of carrots (+8%) rose. Tomatoes are the main import vegetables. Their import amount remained constant in 2012.
