US (CA): Poinsettias give Duarte Nursery a chance to show off new greenhouse

Duarte Nursery is celebrating its 20th season of selling poinsettias and is using the popular plant to show off its new greenhouse. The Hughson nursery has been replacing its older, wooden greenhouses with modern, galvanized steel ones. This year’s poinsettia sale is being held in the latest: a 75,000-square-foot first phase of a greenhouse that when built out will be more than 200,000 square feet.

The steel greenhouses are “more modern in a number of ways,” said Duarte Nursery President John Duarte. They offer much better environmental control, including the ability to hold higher temperatures during winter and more energy-efficient cooling in summer, he said.

The latest greenhouse has just started being put to use, but poinsettias grown elsewhere at the nursery have been moved into it because the building offers “a very nice retail setting,” Duarte said. “The new greenhouse is a big hit – and it doesn’t leak, like the old one.”
