“Plants are able to repair minor light damage”

Excess light can easily lead to non-visible damage to a plant’s photosynthesis mechanism; this in fact happens quite a lot. However, this ‘photoinhibition’ is not necessarily a problem as plants are able to swiftly repair the damage themselves, a study from The Netherlands shows. Once exposed to too much light, however, the plant is no longer able to completely repair the damage itself it turns out. Visible damage to the leaves is the result. Finding the right balance between increased light – which can stimulate growth – and too much light has therefore become essential to growers.
