Italy: Latest seed patents selected by Centuria

The periodic report of the most recent and interesting patents in the fruit and vegetable sector as part of the collaboration between Centuria Agenzia and FreshPlaza continues.

Among the services offered by Centuria, there is in fact patent scouting for partner companies according to their specific needs and interests. Research and monitoring of the main specialised international databases help companies identify patents that are potentially interesting for companies and observe competitors.

The following patents identified by Centuria concern the seed sector. Information is taken from Espacenet, the online database of the European Patent Office (EPO). The text are summaries of patent documents and those applying for patents are also indicated.

Systems for the selection of seeds
Methods for the evaluation and selection of seeds according to their characteristics. One method envisages the collection of "image data" from different parts of seeds illuminated by a light which are then analysed to determine whether they have the desired characteristics. Seeds can be catalogued according to their characteristics. Owner of the patent: Monsanto Technology LLC -USA.

Seed sampling methods
Methods to increase and economise the improvement of germ plasm using non-destructive sampling techniques, and in particular an evaluation method for a desired distinctive tract in seeds. The system includes the removal of tissue samples from single seeds using an automatic sampler that does not affect their germination. The system analyses the samples to find one or more desired characteristics and selects the seeds that present such characteristics. Owner: Monsanto Technology LLC -USA.

Method to evaluate the germination characteristics of seeds
Method to evaluate the germination characteristics of the seeds of a plant and/or of the buds, determining their anatomical characteristics at a particular moment. After having placed the seeds or the buds on a thick support such as for example a germination substratum, they are analysed with an imaging method which obtains three-dimensional data, data segmentation and the association of segments in anatomical units. Owner of the patent: Strube Gmbh & Co - Germany.

Method to improve the yield of seeds and favour plant growth
Method to improve the yield of seeds and favour monocotyledon and dicotyledon plant growth by overexpressing the TMT protein as well as a transgenic plant with better yields and bigger growth with respect to the original variety, thanks to a nucleotidic sequence codifying a TMT protein. Owner of the patent: Technische Untiversität Kaiserslautern - Germany.

Method and device for non-destructive tests on seeds
A method and a system to perform non-destructive tests on seeds. A vibration orientates seeds on an axis, then the position of a known characteristic is identified and a sample position is determined on the seed so a non-destructive test near the sample position can be performed.

The part of the seed is removed from the sample position without damaging the embryo, therefore the vigour of the seed is maintained for later tests. Owner: Pioneer Hi Bred Int - USA.

Methods for the production of artificial seeds
This invention supplies artificial seeds to improve the growth and vigour of renewable plant tissues and enables progressive sowing for plants that reproduce with difficulty. Artificial seeds can also be developed in degradable containers. The methods also enable plants to reproduce quicker to satisfy the growing needs of the planet.
Owner: Du Pont - USA.
