Blue Devil F1 and Red Devil F1

Italy: Fenix introduces intraspecific tomato rootstocks

The increasing use of green grafting is frequently met by an insufficient knowledge of the suitable cultivation techniques on the part of growers, who often cannot choose the ideal rootstock for their needs.

The structure of the soil, the quality of water, the transplant period, the duration of the cultivation cycle and the type of product to graft (cherry, vine, etc.) are only some of the variables that must be taken into consideration by those want to tackle root diseases.

It is a difficult choice and, therefore, often the first attempts of inexperienced growers can be disappointing. Most times they use vigorous rootstocks that disrupt the vegetative/reproductive balance of the plant.

Thanks to many years of research, Fenix can now present two intraspecific rootstocks called Blue Devil F1 and Red Devil F1 - they are balanced, easy to manage and enable growers to take on long cultivation cycles.

As they are intraspecific hybrids, and therefore real tomato hybrids, they have not been crossbred with wild Lycoperisicum species.

There are many advantages in using Blue Devil F1 and Red Devil F1, as they guarantee an improvement in the propagation of the plants in the nursery.

Nursery gardeners will in fact be able to sow them at the same time they sow scions and take advantage of high levels of germination, germination energy and of an excellent compatibility with all of the available tomato varieties. Growers will be able to grow balanced plants that can be managed better from a nutritional point of view.

In addition to the numerous and complete root resistances (amongst which are Fusarium radicis and corky root rot), Blue and Red Devil guarantee the continuity of production even in very long cycles, early ripening, the maintenance of the typical shape of fruits and they improve colour and taste. In Winter, they resist to cold weather better and therefore plants continue producing and are healthier.

Finally, Blue Devil is unique as it stimulates scions to open the leaves so that air can circulate better inside greenhouses, buds are easier to press and the stem is easier to hook. Below is the technical description of the products.

Blue Devil F1 – medium vigour, for end of summer transplants. It is an intraspecific hybrid of Lycopersicum esculentum (L.) characterised by medium-high vigour which confers continuity to scions and maintains the vegetative-productive balance throughout the cycle. It is particularly suitable for all of those varieties that tend to have closed leaves in winter. Fruits ripen early and the shape is not altered in shape, colour or taste. Ideal for all tomato varieties, including the marmande one.

High Resistance (HR): Vd / Fol:1,2 / Vd / For / Pyl / ToMV
Intermediate Resistance (IR): BW / MiMj

Red Devil F1 – high vigour, for spring/summer transplants and sandy and/or salty soils. Despite its high vigour, this Lyvopersicum esculentum (L.) intraspecific hybrid maintains a good vegetative-productive balance. Its strong root system enables very long cycles with more branches.

High Resistance (HR): Vd / Fol:1,2 / For / Bw / ToMV
Intermediate Resistance (IR): MiMj
