with guarantee of 1.25 million
New geothermal well step closer for 8 Dutch growers
Now that the Dutch province of Drenthe has agreed to facilitate the enterprise with a 1.25 million guarantee, a planned geothermal well in that region is a few steps closer to becoming reality. The well, initiated by 8 growers, is to be drilled at cucumber nursery Polman. “We are most definitely on the right track,” says front-runner Rien van Geel.
The provincial back-up comes in the form of a guarantee: should the drill prove unsuccessful, then the local government acts as an insurer. “We already had the assurance for a while,” says Van Geel, “but now it has been made official.” The actual bankrolling comes from the 8 growers and the Rabobank. When completely covered, the project will commence by the end of this year.
The producers involved have a combined acreage of 62 hectares. There are three cucumber growers (Drenthe Growers, Nursery Luimes and Polman), vegetable grower Kuipers and four ornamental growers (Van Winden Energy Partnership Boerma Eefting, Meewisse Nurseries, and Van Geel Chrysanthemums). The drill is accompanied by Bram Hanemaaijer of Agro Directory. The well’s capacity is estimated at 15.1 MW and 7,000 hours use per year.
