Indonesia: Unseasonable rains drives vegetable prices up

Widespread harvest failures, which resulted from fields drenched by unseasonable weather, have pushed up the price of some vegetables in Indonesia, a retailer said on Friday. The downpours have farmers worried, as several commodities have already experienced harvest failures, while the Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that the rainy season this year may last until at least August.

“The harvest failure is evenly spread across regions. Usually, if one producing region experiences a harvest failure, the shortage in supply could be offset by other regions, but this time, this cannot take place,” said Sugiyono, assistant manager for the Kramat Jati retail market in East Jakarta.

He added that wet weather could also endanger the storage of vegetables, which are prone to rotting in humid environments.
