Colombia: Organic fertiliser Kaitosol now licensed

A Northampton company is helping Colombians to grow bigger tomatoes with the help of a new fertiliser. According to the Northampton Chronicle, Agentra, in Derby Road, has secured a licence to sell organic fertiliser in Colombia, where it is being used to grow tomatoes 25 per cent bigger than before, boost banana crops and increase the potato harvest.

Rafael Jose Mora, director of Agentra, came across the fertiliser, KaitoSol, while studying for his MPhil at The University of Cambridge eight years ago, where he met the professor who owns the product.

Mr Mora, who is originally from Colombia, said: “Securing the license took time as there are very strong regulations around the use of fertiliser in Colombia and it takes a long time to register the product. We knew it would be a growing market as Colombia benefits from having continuous farming all year round, so fertilisers are sold into the market continuously.”

The product is 100 per cent natural, made from plant and shrimp extracts, and does not contain any harmful chemicals or genetically modified compounds.

Initial research into the tomato crops that have been treated with the fertiliser showed that they were 25 per cent bigger and also that it created seven per cent more of the giant tomatoes.

Mr Mora was a guest speaker at a Latin America business breakfast on May 17 during UK Trade and Investment Export Week-High Growth Markets.

He shared tips on exporting to Colombia and said: “Remember there are so many opportunities in Colombia for UK firms."

"The country doesn’t make anything so there is a constant high demand for all types of machinery and high technology from car engine parts to lighting - all of the products that firms in the UK can supply.” For details about Agentra visit www.agentra.co.uk
