"Italians need to increase fruit consumption"

Some 75% of Italians have difficulty following a healthy diet, a report by the Centre for Study and Research on Obesity from the University of Milan said on Thursday.

Italy's famous 'Mediterranean diet' alone is not enough to "fulfil the nutritional needs of the Italians," centre director Michele Carruba said at Parma's Planet Nutrition and Integration conference.

"With the right amount of fruits and vegetables daily, Italians could reduce their risk of cancer by 35%," Carruba said. Claudio Cricelli, president of the Italian Society of General Medicine, said that a "multivitamin supplement is recommended, especially in the 50-60 year age group". "Given the aging population and increasing life expectancy in Italy, the promotion of health and especially prevention is a priority in terms of cost savings and therapeutic care," Cricelli said.
