"Nowadays we have 20 acres of greenhouses which use supplemental light that give love and tender care to grow cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers throughout the winter," said Mohyuddin Mirza from the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association. "Thanks to this the supply has been pretty good, but the prices has been a little bit low. But we are encouraging consumers to buy locally as much as possible."
Aside of the increase of quality, Mirza also noted a change in the varieties. "Nowadays we grow about ten varieties of tomatoes. The big juicy beefsteak tomatoes are slowing down, there is less production due to less demand. Consumers are now more into cluster, grape, cocktail tomatoes. Also heritage varieties are coming in, because taste is gaining in popularity."
