Daaf Steentjes, De Wieringermeer, on the Morraine variety:
"Morraine is low-maintenance crop and less susceptible to various diseases"
The Morraine is the most successful paprika of De Ruiter. Daaf Steentjes, one of the four directors of renowned and progressive pepper nursery The Wieringermeer, has now gained his own experience with the breed.
Steentjes is in his second year, cultivating 10 hectares. “After fooling around with some other varieties, we finally decided on the Morraine. And in spite of the relative lack of daylight in the past few months, the breed has performed admirably. Fruit weight is about 10 to 20 grams higher than the average variety. In addition, Morraine is low-maintenance and less susceptible to various diseases.”
In terms of chemicals, Steentjes prefers the clean approach. “Plant protection must be as clean as possible. After a month we start with the use of various biological control agents, including Cucummeris, Swirsky Orius, Macrolophus and Aphelinnus. So far, the results have been satisfactory.”
