"We won't make the same amount as in previous years"

Greenhouse fennel season started at Van Doorne Imex

At Van Doorne Imex from 's-Gravenzande the greenhouse fennel season has started again. On Saturday Henk van Doorne harvested the first fennel from the greenhouse himself. There used to be more Dutch greenhouse fennel growers, but Henk is now one of the few left, 'Last of the Mohicans' style.

"There has been a lot of failure during cultivation. We won't make the same amounts as in previous years. The area is also smaller than in previous years," says Henk. Almost all fennel is for export. "Fennel remains an unloved product among the Dutch consumers. In many South European countries fennel is still a main course. Here it's a luxury article, despite being a very healthy product."

As always, Henk is positive about the season. "There's no question of an over supply. At the moment England is the main buyer. Other export destinations are still taking a look around."
